2004 Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge

On Friday, February 27th, Aina Haina's three qualifying students attended the State Finals for the Reader's Digest Word Power Challenge. We braved the inclement weather to go to the Hawaii Theater in downtown Honolulu.
Many of us had never been to the Hawaii Theater, and we were impressed by the gilded interior and huge stage. They told us the Theater cost $500,000 to build in 1922 ... and it has cost over TEN MILLION dollars to refurbish it!
Our qualifiers were up against 19 other students from all over the state, including the Big Island. Some of the students were from grades 7 and 8.
Star Bulletin columnist Charles Memminger was the moderator. The preliminary competition consisted of 18 questions, divided into rounds of individual and group questions.
Our fifth grade qualifier, Vicky, got 16 of the 18 questions correct and advanced to the finals with six other students.
